Introduction to Media and Information Literacy

1. In your opinion, what makes an individual literate in media and information?

I think that an individual is literate in media and information if he/she can recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. Being media literate he/she can understand the complex messages we received from television, radio, Internet, newspapers, magazines, books, billboards, video games, music, and all other forms of media. All in all, in a digital society; one needs to be able to use, understand, inquire, create, communicate and think critically. It is important to have capacity to effectively access, organize, analyze, evaluate, and create messages in a variety of forms.

2. What activities/habits do you practice which illustrate media and information literacy? Give at least three examples.

For me, watching K-Drama makes me to be media and information literate because it expands my vocabulary by reading and understanding the English subtitle. Second, is that I’m using facebook and twitter for me to be informed and updated of the happenings in our school and also to express my thought and feelings on a certain topic. Lastly, I’m watching television for me to be updated on what is happening not just in my country but in the world.
